Heavy enough to actually "compact your soil". If you buy a unit too light to compact, you have not met the need for which you purchased a cultipacker.
With our wheel's groove angle & depth, along with an appx weight of just over 100lbs per foot. Custom Cultipackers helps maximize soil-to-seed contact and optimize your yield.

Before you plant, do you use a disc, tiller, drag or drill to prepare a seedbed?
With any of these methods, you loosen the soil making it easier for your seed to take root and grow. But you also introduce air into the soil. Once your seed is exposed to moisture and heat it begins to develop hair-size roots. If these small roots hit an air pocket, they dry and die – greatly reducing your yield. To improve your results, you need to pack the soil and reduce air pockets. The best tool to provide a wide, uniformed compression, is a cultipacker.
A cultipacker is an essential agricultural implement to maximize your planting yield. Farmers have used cultipackers since they began using machines to help cultivate crops. It crushes dirt clods, removes air pockets, and presses down small stones, forming a smooth, firm seedbed. Where seed has been broadcast, the roller gently firms the soil around the seeds, ensuring shallow seed placement and excellent seed-to-soil contact.
3-pt hitch offers “quick lift & go”, and it is easier to maneuver in tight spaces. But if you're going over the rolling ground, when tractor tires are lower than the rear, the packer could lift a little providing less compaction.
Pull-tongue “floats” better and provides more uniform compaction on uneven ground. But it's more cumbersome if moving from one field/plot to another some distance away. Another disadvantage is if you need to back into narrow paths/coves. The 3-pt hitch is easily lifted, back up, drop, and pull out. Pull-tongue will likely be more of a challenge.
Best of both worlds – We offer a series II unit that has a 3-pt hitch & removable pull-tongue. This unit will last for decades, so the $150 option will give you versatility for years to come. Your tractor or property may chance, but your ole Custom Cultipacker will still be in service.
From my experience and talking with hundreds of farmers, hunters, friends, and customers, there is no clear advantage of one over the other - and basically comes down to personal preference. Some say they like the grooved wheel because it "rolls better", others say it creates "indentions to help hold water", and I've some say, "that is what my grandfather used". Advocates for smooth wheels say they like the more "uniformed compression". I can only say that physically speaking, if designed & weighted properly, they both work for their intended purpose. Each has weight concentrated in the wheel edges that creates a wedge to compact the soil and help with water retention. To address the "rolling better" concept, our wheels turn independently on a 1 3/4" solid axle - and the axle is held by bearings to allow it to turn.
For our design, we followed USDA's recommendation for the wedge angle of the wheels, and their desired weight of appx 100lbs per ft. More weight is always better, but to your "correct" point of diminishing return: As stated, our units meet the USDA's weight suggestion of 100lbs per ft. If reasonably good soil, that is prepared and suitable for planting, no extra weight should be needed. We offer weight baskets to add weight as desired, but they are most needed in the northeast and southwest where rocky soil is commonplace. In the quality soil of the great plains and Mississippi delta, there really is not much need for extra weight.
When determining the width, based on need, equipment & topography, there are two general concepts. One is to have as large equipment as you can pull to cover a large area as quickly as possible. The second is to cover the tracks of your tractor or tillage equipment.

Our flip-over models are strong & durable. We don’t use bolts for axles and tubing for bearings. We use actual trailer spindles, hubs, wheels & tires. Your unit will come with 2000lb spindles & hubs, and 12" wheels/tires.
Our double-gang units are built tight and roll smoothly to reduce load on your tractor. Rear gang is offset 1.7" to give you twice the soil compaction in less time. The rear gangs float independently to work in uneven terrain, but still give you plenty of clearance with lifted.
Hydraulic units come with new 14/15" tires, hoses, & quick-connects. Everything you need to hit the field.
The 3.5” wide wheels are 13” diameter and have a ¾” thick hub. We use 1 3/4" solid steel axle and quality grease-able bearings. The frames are made from 2 ½” angle iron that is 3/8” thick. Extra cross-bracing and laser-cut bearing plates ensure smooth operation and durably.
Heavy enough to actually "compact your soil". If you buy a unit too light to actually compact, you haven't met the need for which you purchased a cultipacker.
With our wheel's groove angle & depth, along with an appx weight of 100lbs per foot (+160lbs), Custom Cultipackers helps maximize the soil-to-seed contact and optimize your yield.
Our ATV units are heavy enough to actually "compact your soil", but the quality square frame makes it easy to pull. If you buy a unit too lite to actually compact, you haven't met the need for which you purchased a cultipacker. Available with drop-pin or ball hitch tongue.
The ATV Frame is a bit lighter and pull-tongue is available with a drop-pin or ball-hitch. The frames are made with 8” wide C-channel, ¼” bearing plates, 1 ¾” solid axle, and 4-bolt flange grease-able bearings.
For the Standard Frame, we use 1 3/4" solid steel axle and quality grease-able bearings. The frames are made from 2 ½” angle iron that is 3/8” thick. Extra cross-bracing and laser-cut bearing plates ensure smooth operation and durably.
For traveling, you have a few options.
Units less than 5' are available with 600lb or 2000lb axles/wheels.
Units of 6+ feet are available with 2000lb spindles & hubs, and 12" wheels/tires.
Travel options include a flip-over unit, or a manual-lift set-up.
Either are strong & durable and give you a convenient way of transporting from food-plot to food-plot, or to a different property. It also allows you to lift unit off the ground when stored.
Our “flip-over” models are available in sizes of 3-10’ and with 600lb or 2000lb wheels.
* The flip-over option gives you great flexibility at a reasonable price. But these things weigh appx 100lbs per foot. Flipping over an 800-1000 cultipacker can be difficult. If you opt for a flip-over, I recommend you block both wheels & use a chain or strap to flip. Just let it free-fall and then hook back up. A good alternative for larger units is a manual-lift set-up.
The “manual-lift” travel system eliminates the need to disconnect or flip your unit to travel. For larger units, we use an 8k jack to make lifting easier & quicker.
Custom Cultipacker equipment is warranted against defects in material or workmanship for three years. Carbon steel cultipacker wheels are warranted for 5 years from purchase date.

Choose a 3-pt hitch, pull-tongue, hydraulic travel, and/or bat-wing frame. Custom built to meet your needs & quality you can count on! We distribute nationwide.
Most other cultimulchers are built with a C-channel frame. To greatly reduce “frame flexing”, we use 3x5” (or 4x6”) rectangular tubing with reinforced corners. It cost a bit more & is heavier, but it makes a cleaner-looking, much more rigid, and stronger frame.
The 5-lug wheels & 15" travel tires are mounted on 3500lb spindles and attached to a 4” diameter axle with grease fittings for smoother operation.
Retractable spring-teeth are spaced appx 7-8” apart and have a harden-steel, replaceable plow end. You have a choice of one or two spring-tooth gangs.
Each 4” wide, 13” diameter carbon-steel cultipacker wheel has two 3/8” thick hubs for a total of ¾” of steel per wheel, riding on a 1 3/4" or 2” solid steel axle. We take pains to ensure cultipacker wheels are mounted tightly to reduce drag & wear. Bearings are attached with laser-cut plates.
